Varsity Tutors LLC is an education technology company with the mission to "connect students to top tutors capable of fostering intellectual and personal development in a positive learning atmosphere." Varsity Tutors was founded in October 2007 by Charles “Chuck” K. Cohn.

According to a Notice of Merger filed to the Missouri Secretary of State, Varsity Tutors LLC and V Tutors LLC merged effective as of December 31, 2018. The surviving entity would continue with the name Varsity Tutors LLC. Charles K. Cohn signed the Notice of Merger as the CEO.

Varsity Tutors LLC is registered as a foreign LLC in Nevada.  According to SilverFlume Nevada’s Business Portal, Varsity Tutors LLC registered as a foreign limited liability company with jurisdiction in Missouri on February 11, 2015. The entity number assigned to Varsity Tutors LLC by the State of Nevada is E0072212015-2. As of February 2020, Charles Cohn and Christopher C. Swenson are listed as the active managers of Varsity Tutors LLC.

Chuck Cohn is the founder and CEO of Varsity Tutors LLC

According to an Amendment of Articles of Organization filed to the State of Missouri on May 16, 2012, Chuck Cohn is recognized as the organizer and authorized member of Varsity Tutors LLC since the incorporation of the company in October 2007. Nevada’s Business Portal recognizes Cohn as one of the active officers of Varsity Tutors LLC. According to his LinkedIn account, Cohn lists his roles with Varsity Tutors as “Founder & Chief Executive Officer.” According to the about page of VarsityTutors.com, “Varsity Tutors was born out of the educational experiences of our founder and CEO, Chuck Cohn.”

Eight investors fund Varsity Tutors

According to Crunchbase, as of February 2020, Varsity Tutors LLC has raised a total of $107 million in funding over four rounds from eight major investors.

Varsity Tutors LLC raised $7 million in the first round. Varsity Tutors LLC first received funding on May 28, 2014, in the Series A early-stage venture round. According to Crunchbase, Varsity Tutors LLC raised $7 million from two investors: David Karandish and Chris Sims.

Varsity Tutors LLC raised $50 million in the second round. Varsity Tutors LLC raised the second round of funding on November 15, 2015, in the Series B early-stage venture round. According to Crunchbase, Varsity Tutors LLC raised $50 million from three investors: Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV), Stuart Udell, and Adam Levine.

Varsity Tutors LLC raised an undisclosed amount in the third round. Varsity Tutors LLC third received funding on December 7, 2017, in a funding round. According to Crunchbase, the name of the investor is Nimble Ventures, but the amount raised is undisclosed.

Varsity Tutors LLC raised $50 million in the fourth round. Varsity Tutors LLC raised the fourth round of funding on February 14, 2018, in the Series C late-stage venture round. According to Crunchbase, Varsity Tutors LLC raised $50 million from three investors from Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV), Learn Capital, and Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

VarsityTutors.com is a live learning platform that connects more than 25,000 students to private instructors with knowledge in over 500 subjects. According to the about page of VarsityTutors.com, their vision is to “seamlessly connect experts and learners in any subject, anywhere, anytime.”

According to their official YouTube channel, students have accessed more than four million hours of live instruction on the platform; they have completed 150,000,000+ practice problems through free online learning tools and mobile apps from Varsity Tutors.

Services provided by VarsityTutors.com. VarsityTutors.com advertises academic tutoring in a variety of subjects and test prep from K-8, high school students, and graduate students. Additionally, the site offers free resources such as flashcards, classroom assessment tools, mobile apps, test prep books, Hotmath, and Aplusmath.

Varsity Tutors acquired Veritas Prep in January 2019

According to a press release from PR Newswire, Varsity Tutors LLC acquired Veritas Prep LLC in January 2019 for an undisclosed amount. Veritas Prep LLC is described as one of the “nation’s largest privately-owned test prep and admissions consulting” companies.

At the time of the press release, Varsity Tutors Live connected students to more than 40,000 tutors for individualized instruction in over 1,000 subjects. By early 2019, Veritas Prep had helped over 300,000 students since 2002. In the press release, the founder of Varsity Tutors LLC highlighted the benefits and resources the acquisition added to the Varsity Tutors brand.
