Full story

Craigslist is an American classified advertisement website dedicated to community posts about activities, services, discussion forums, housing, selling items, resumes, gigs, and jobs. Most ads posts are free except for job postings in select areas, all by-dealer categories, and gigs and services in the US and Canada. The website was founded in early 1995 by Craig Newmark. Today, it is one of the most recognized and visited sites in the world.

Jim Buckmaster, the current CEO of Craigslist, joined the company in 2000 after submitting his resume on the website’s resume section. Buckmaster is credited for implementing some of the site’s most successful features including the homepage design, multi-city architecture, flagging system, discussion forums, and the best-of-Craigslist.

Pricing

Pricing ranges from inexpensive to high-end depending on the seller. Transactions are handled privately between the buyer and seller, thus Craigslist does not mediate payment or refunds.

Writers

It's difficult to estimate the number of writers available on Craigslist. The Craigslist marketplace can connect you to over 700 local cities in 70 countries. Each city can be home to between zero and hundreds of writing projects a day. You can find writers fluent in Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and more.

Sections and features

The community section features local activities, events, and news.

The services section features ads for local services such as automotive, beauty, legal, real estate, skilled trade, and writing services. This is a great place to find local businesses.

The discussion forums are a popular place to discuss current events and contemporary problems. From food and music to jokes and politics, this section brings the hot topics at the heart of the local community. The writing forum contains discussions on literature as well as people helping others come up with a great writing topic.

The housing section hosts available apartments, houses, shared rooms, commercial offices, storage spaces, vacation rentals, and other real estate ads.

The for sale section is the garage sale of the Internet with people selling new and used items from 45 different subcategories including antiques, auto parts, electronics, heavy equipment, jewelry, and tickets.

The jobs section features full and part-time work opportunities in 31 different general fields including accounting, art, education, HR, marketing, retail, tech support, and writing/editing.

The gig section features temporary and flexible jobs for independent contractors and freelancers. Short-term writers and editors can be found in this section along with many other unique opportunities.

The resume section is home to resumes from professionals in any industry imaginable.

Other site features

The flagging system is the cornerstone of the Craigslist. It allows users to flag illegal and inappropriate posts using the “prohibited” link at the top of each post. If a free classified ad is flagged enough times, it will be automatically removed. The Craigslist staff and automated systems also work hard to flag and remove inappropriate posts.

The best-of-craigslist features posts nominated by readers as a collection of the most memorable posts on Craigslist over the years. Any post can be nominated clicking the heart button at the bottom of each page. The pages with the most votes are featured.

The system status page gives visitors a status report of the site. If no system issues have been reported, it will display a green “craigslist runs good!” message.

Snapshot

Because writing is just one segment of the many classifieds that exist, little is known about the actual nature and quality of the services that are offered. To get started, you just go to the website, find the listing page and list your project. People will usually list a project with specific requirements or perhaps find a writer that is advertising services. It is a true marketplace in that respect and Craigslist does not mediate.

Refund policy

What happens if you are unhappy with writing services from Craigslist.org and want your money back? We looked for a clear refund policy page and found the following.

No, this writing service doesn't seem to offer refunds.
