Full story

Freelancer.com is an Australian freelancing and crowdsourcing marketplace. Thanks to its number of users and projects, it’s the largest freelancing marketplace in the world. It connects over 33 million employers and freelancers globally from over 247 countries, regions, and territories. The marketplace is designed for employers to hire freelancers specializing in software development, writing, data entry, design, marketing, and many other service projects.

Freelancer has grown exponentially thanks to the acquisition of several outsourcing marketplaces including GetAFreelancer.com, EUFreelance.com, LimeExchange, Scriptlance.com, Freelancer.de, Freelancer.co.uk, Webmaster-talk.com, Rent-A-Coder, and vWorker.

Filter system

Freelancer allows clients to search through projects using six different filters: budget, type, skills, languages, and job state.

The budget filter allows users to search for all the available jobs with their budget parameters. Freelancer uses three subcategories: fixed-price projects, hourly projects, and contests. The fixed-price projects filter displays projects based on their preset average bids. The hourly projects filter projects based on the bidding average per hour. The contest filter displays contest based on the amount of money offered for the winning bid.

The type filter narrows down projects based on local jobs, featured jobs, recruiter jobs, and full-time jobs.

Users can use the skills filter to find a project in which special skills are needed, such as knowledge of .NET, PHP, HTML, Javascript, or CSS. Alternatively, users can also enter a skill and search for projects that way.

The languages filter is similar to the skills filter, where users can type in the language they desire in their search for their next project.

The job state filter allows users to search through either all open jobs or both open and closed jobs.

How it works

Freelancer provides two different user interfaces: one for freelancers and one for contractors. As a contractor, you toggle to the “I want to hire” option. Posting a project is a three-step process.

Step one is posting the details of the project with requirements and expectations. Contractors will automatically begin to receive bids from interested freelancers. Alternatively, contractors may search through the pool of freelancers and make a direct offer.

Step two is choosing the freelancer. In order to find the perfect freelancer, contractors can browse and search through profiles, chat in real-time, and compare proposals to select the ideal candidate.

Step three is the payment. Freelancers don’t receive payment until the client is satisfied. Freelancer uses their trademark Milestone Payment system where payment is released according to a schedule of preset goals, or when the work is completed and approved.
